ROOTS TO ROCK PLAYLIST what to expect feb 25

Elvis Presley, Elvis Presley

In the era of sock hops, the American diner, and I Love Lucy, a young man with a swing in his step and a groove to share stepped into the spotlight and permanently changed the course of music history. His debut album, simply titled Elvis Presley, left audiences shaking and swaying and ushered in the genre that would later be coined rock and roll. This album oozes attitude and range, and with that must be paired a versatile beverage that reflects both the classic nostalgia of the 1950s and the progressive nature of the king of rock & roll’s transformative record.

Released: 1956

Genre: Rockabilly, Rock & Roll

BB King, Live at The Regal

Is there anything more provocative and pure than the blues? We don’t think so. Without the blues, many genres—rock and roll specifically—wouldn’t be able to stand. One of the most iconic figures of the blues is the legendary BB King, and his 1965 Live at The Regal exemplifies his power and electricity on the stage as both a guitarist and vocalist. This live performance is often considered one of his greatest contributions to music. It’s raw, unadulterated, and downright sexy—everything you need in both the blues and in your drink.

Released: 1965

Genre: Blues

Janis Joplin, Pearl

Janis Joplin proved early on that rock & roll wasn’t just a man’s game. Her soulful, gritty tone fused the blues and rock into this intoxicating, hypnotic subgenre. Janis Joplin is known not only for her unbridled vocals but also for her celebrated style and presence. Pearl is her masterpiece, perfectly showcasing the best of her talent and her ability to bridge the audience gap. A compatible drink with this quintessential album must reflect her strength and a bit of her freeform flair.

Released: 1971

Genre: Blues Rock, Rock & Roll

Led Zeppelin, Untitled (Led Zeppelin IV) [EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK BOOZE AND VINYL]

Like a group of howling druids summoning the rock gods, Zeppelin’s IV is bombastic and BIG. Interestingly, it was recorded in a Victorian mansion where the band took breaks to roam the grounds with cups of tea in hand. The fourth Zeppelin album was the result of perseverance and confidence. While it is officially untitled, the IV stands for the four members of the band. The album includes an eight-minute song, which at the time was considered commercial suicide. That song is “Stairway to Heaven.” The album crushed sales records. Get ready to drink and party along to the band’s most beloved songs.

Released: 1971

Genre: Blues Rock, Rock & Roll

Rolling Stones, Exile on Main St

The Rolling Stones have been producing music since the beginning of the 1960s. They propelled themselves to worldwide superstar status early on in their career, proving their importance in the growth and movement of the rock and roll genre. While albums like Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed remain staples of their discography, it’s their 1972 double album Exile on Main St that captured the hearts of their devoted listeners, and remains the jewel of their catalog to this day. It’s unconventional from what had been produced by them up to that point, but that’s what makes it unforgettable and important. An underdog, fan-favorite beverage is the perfect pairing for this celebrated Stones album.

Released: 1972

Genre: Blues Rock, Rock & Roll

Greta Van Fleet, Battle at Garden’s Gate

Over the past year or so, Greta Van Fleet has taken the world by storm. Infusing elements from legendary bands like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and The Who, this four-piece group is reclaiming the purity of rock & roll and introducing the genre to a whole new audience. Their second studio album, Battle at Garden’s Gate, is filled with rich instrumental texture and transportive, fantastical lyrics. Let’s pair something fresh with a familiar twist to this breakthrough album that’s sure to prove longevity in the years to come.
